Screw conveyors and spiral conveyors

Two designs, one principle. Which one fits depends on particle size, throughput and the bend radius your route requires.

Two designs

Rigid or flexible

Both spiral conveyors work without a centre shaft. The choice follows from particle size, throughput and the bend radius your route requires.

Type RL(N)

Robust augers

The rugged one

Rigid shaftless conveying spirals in steel or stainless steel for large volumes and bulky material. Built as a tube or trough conveyor.

Diameter
50–700 mm
Throughput
up to 600 m³/h, depending on bulk density
Item length
up to approx. 400 mm
Duty
up to 8,700 h/year

Type SL(N) / KL(N)

Flexible augers

The adaptable one

Flexible spirals in tube systems of steel, stainless steel or plastic. For powders, granulates, dusts and pellets — including awkward routes.

Diameter
55–125 mm
Conveying length
endless, with a transfer per spiral type
Particle size
up to approx. 45 mm
Routing
through tube bends

The full type ranges with lengths, throughputs and motor ratings are on the product pages.

The difference is hard to describe and easy to show: on the left the rigid auger as a cutaway model, on the right the flexible spiral in a working installation.

Type RL(N) — rigid

Inlet, material flow along the shaftless spiral, outlet and head-end drive. About one minute, soundtrack in English.

Type SL(N) — flexible

Intake through the hopper, conveying through the tube system, discharge at the end of the route. About one minute, soundtrack in English.

Selection guide

Both designs are screw conveyors without a centre shaft. We call them spiral conveyors just as readily: conveying happens through the spiral itself, not around a shaft that material could wrap around.

Choose rigid (Type RL) when large volumes are moved or the material is bulky: Type RL handles item lengths up to approx. 400 mm. The rigid design is also built for high duty cycles of up to 8,700 hours a year.

Choose flexible (Type SL or KL) when the route is long and awkward, the material fine to medium-grained — up to approx. 45 mm particle size — and the quantity manageable. Tube bends allow conveying routes that a rigid system would need several sections and transfer points for.

Just the component? We hold more than 150 rigid conveying spirals in different sizes in stock — see components.
